Day one at Bath and Body...
Not gonna lie, I was kind of petrified of the prospect of working retail. I don't do too well with people, or so I thought. I was in the front of the store. My boss told me that I was going to be working also on the cash register, but they had me up front the whole time. (Which ended up being pretty cool because I liked the whole helping people bit.) And what I like, and miss about working, is the STORIES!! I love having stories I can tell about the wacky people that we had to deal with or whatever. Being right there with the customers, thats where the stories are. YES!
And let me tell you.... W-O-W!

We had been told over and over again that sometimes people will come and ask you to help them find a gift. I always thought this was ridiculous because I don't do that. People try to talk to me, I nod and smile and do my own thing.

Here's some of my favorite moments...

*an older couple coming in trying to find gifts for 9 people they were buying for. Of course, they had no idea what to get and were asking me my opinion... They didnt go for anything I said, but hey, that's cool. They were funny to talk to. The guy had long white hair and a straggly beard, laughing about his wife and her inability to keep track of money.

*A man coming in telling me about his wife who bought a year supply of the holiday lotions last year and were back for more. He went around smelling each bottle, (it looked like he was sniffing cocaine or something). Come to find out he was SICK and had broken his nose so many times that he struggled smelling. He illustrated the broken nose by flattening it to his face. And boy.. did is squish..
OH! KAY!

*Woman and husband coming in and asking for the holiday vanilla bean lotion because the husband loved it so much and it had an aphrodisiac in it. (MERH?) Super... He made her buy a whole bunch last year and wanted more. "But this one smells different from the old one." She proceeds to pull out a bottle from last year and smell each, have her husband smell each, and then have me smell each... They smelled the same... He was super excited that we had that vanilla....

*Chick asking me for help to see if such and such would be an adequate gift to bring for Thanksgiving. It was some snowman thing and that was pretty non-denominational and they were Christian.... . She went on how about how she was going to some grandparents house for thanksgiving and was told not to bring food, but couldnt bring NOTHING. And she couldnt bring WINE because, you know, old people and WINE. (??)

*high school girl coming in, wearing a pink/black tube top with her bra being used to look like straps. (although the back of said bra was very prominently stretched across her back for the view of the general public). As she walked to the other end of the store, I looked toward her chuckling to myself and saying quietly under my breath; someday, friend. YOU will be in my book.

*this one might be my favorite. I was looking towards some customers I was talking to, to turn and see this man standing in front of me, waiting. Totally shocked me. He asked me for my help to buy something for his daughter. He talked super fast and went on about how he was a single dad and had raised his daughter for the last 8 years and didnt want to get her the same old thing, (t shirt, electronics.) She's a nurse and has 2 kids and he just didnt know what to do. He had 5 daughters, but she was his favorite, although he laughed as he requested that i not tell the other 4.  I spent about 5 minutes talking to him about stuff he could possibly get. He didnt buy anything but he was so grateful that it really, honestly filled my heart with joy. (I realize i say that a lot, but...)

It was fun. I want to do it more...

who knew?
